Why It's Worth the Effort to Make Your Bed

Even in the most luxurious homes, no amount of well-appointed furnishings can bring about the tranquility of a well-made bed. But that’s not what this post is about. Because for even all of those homes on days without the housekeeper, a persistent query remains: “Why should I make my bed if I’m just going to unmake it later?”

A simple question deserves a simple answer: it’s about you.

It’s not about the other people in your home, or unexpected company, or even ensuring that you don’t discover stray pet hair and toys when you do climb into bed later on. When you make your bed, you send a message to yourself that your home is valued, that your space is worth investing in, that your peace of mind is important. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t feel apologetic when their bed is unmade. This is also an internal dialogue—and it’s not a positive one.

No hospital corners are needed. Of course there is an argument for making sure everything in your home is perfectly tidy, but that’s not a daily realism. If a “proper” bed-making seems onerous, simply pull the comforter over everything and fluff up your pillow: 60 seconds and done.

We say over and over that your home is sacred, that your home has tremendous value, and that your home impacts tremendously your peace of mind. Even if nothing else in your day reaffirms these truisms, spend that one minute each morning to remind yourself of them. Just do whatever it is that makes your bed look “made” to you. And here's some inspiration.
